What are smart cards? Key cards are electronically coded plastic cards about the same size and width as a credit card. These key cards are inserted into slots located near the guest room; if the information matches that stored at the front desk the room door will open. Cards are recorded with every new guest.

How is a smart card any different from traditional magnetic keycards?

A keycard lock is a lock operated by a keycard, a flat, rectangular plastic card. The card typically magnetic stripe, Wiegand wire embedded cards, smart card (embedded with a read/write electronic microchip), and RFID proximity cards.

The Smart card uses contactless technology allows you to hold the card over the reader at the door. It’s also wipeable and easy to clean, leaving you in control. Additionally, the smart card can hold more data not only the basic guest arrival departure, room number information etc.

The technology behind most hotel key cards provides the best protection against misuse. However, smart cards, which are increasingly used in hotels, are not so easy to reset and read as magstripe cards are, making them a perfect alternative to traditional hotel key cards.
